See the movie trailer

So it's been six years since the motel room, we open with Scully alive and well wearing a doctor's robe. Livin' the dream! But Scully doesn't want her little boy patient to die. His name is Christian, and he looks to be about 9 to 11. Coincidentally almost the same age as her own son... out there somewhere...

So then the FBI asks Scully if she can contact Mulder. She claims to not work with Him anymore. Oh, what a way to mask the truth. Yes, you don't “work” with him anymore. You just simply co-decorate a lovely home with him.

We then see her commute home... middle of nowhere... a cute locked gate... lovely little colonial cottage witty a huge wrap- around porch. Dirt road. Cozy interior. She then walks into Mulder's office, very reminiscent of the pilot. So far this movie has been nicely done without insulting x-philes by dumbing it down for first timers, although, I can't imagine anyone who didn't watch the show paying big money to see this in the theater. I mean... that's like watching Lord of the Rings Return of the King without watching the first two films... at the very least. This is not even to mention actually reading the books. And did Hugh Jackson insult the viewers by doing a recap on Frodo's history in a few sentences? No. And I somewhat appreciate them limiting lame sentences in recapping Nine years. But alas, I am already getting ahead of myself in the third paragraph. Mulder... it seems here, is in hiding still from the FBI from his escapades while escaping from military prison.

Scully is trying to convince him to help the FBI. Get out of isolation and having beards. And throwing pencils. He decides to go- after looking at Samantha's picture. And apparently he really wants to ride in a chopper. So hold on a second. for the past 5-6 years, these two have been living in this cute little house I.T.M.O.N. (In the Middle Of Nowhere) and are still together??? Um, this is not something to just take with a grain of salt people, it seems they are A) not married (no surprise) and B) still retain their character traits that NOMOROS were freaking out about. So they were wrong. Oh, and also, there can still be a good plot and good investigations... as we will see in the next paragraphs.

So they go to a sweet task force meeting. Still no indication on the level of their... intimate relationship... although Scully is showing a lot of worried faces and Mulder is back to being a smart ass. Scully is callin' father Joe out hardcore. Mulder has a glimmer in his eye. This is refreshing after seeing him super un-enthused about the truth, in our last evaluation of “The Truth” (series finale).

Later, Mulder is begging her to go adventuring with him. So she takes to file to do some good R&R (reading and research). She just wants to cuddle apparently, she doesn't want to run around chasing things. Later, back at the Cottage... it's night-night time. And it's a cuddle fest. Yes, the third or fourth scene where they have a bedtime talk (see Requiem and the Truth). I'm sure there is another though... Scully is disturbed about Christian... and they have a cute couples talk (CCT). They read each other's mind just like old times. And Mulder is still a smart ass.

But hold the phone... this past scene affirms some unanswered questions forever left officially unanswered (typical X-Files). Mulder again uses the words "our son" when referring to William. Implies such juicy facts. Then Scully talks shop. And it gets Mulder all rambunctious to solve this x-file. So they both rush out to meet father Joe... in turtlenecks. Is this 1993?

And then they fight. Scully doesn't want to be involved, she calls Mulder out in just trying to save Samantha. Scully, come now, that's not the way to get more snuggles. Now if Shippers thought that Mulder and Scully would live happily ever after... them those Shippers are morons. Of course this relationship was going to be less smooth than a recently-paved road. It was going to be like one that is heavily traveled by tanker trucks and warped, and constantly having potholes.

So many scenes go by, where Mulder is getting the case solved by himself. And later he comes to the hospital to try to get Scully to stay with him, but she says she doesn't want to go into the darkness with him. she likes her homey-home now, normal life. With a wrap around porch. But Mulder can't stay away from being a Bad-Ass-crime-solver. She wants him to write a book. She wants him to choose the files or her. Duchovny does some of his best acting in a long time as you can literally see the wheels in his head turning. He decides to save the missing woman instead of making Scully happy. Interesting.

Then they run into each other at father Joe's place. And again, Mulder runs off, leaving Scully behind. See, Nomoros? Nothing has changed. Just more snuggling and couples fights. They are the same flawed people.

Back at the hospital, they get to hold hands. And question joe together super-FBI-romantic-like. Afterwards, in the hall, Scully admits falling in love with Mulder's stubbornness. And then Mulder says it's “why they can't be together.” Does he mean be “together” together, or just work together? I hope it's a latter, because that is the only thing that makes sense. Even though they actually did quite well working with each other for a solid 7 years. The writers didn't really write that very well, to convey the latter it would take more effort in choosing the dialogue and directing better. Something some high school honor students may be able to pull off. Not really pleased with this scene, I expect better, Chris Carter.

After all the bloodshed, arrests and rescues, we are Back at the cozy home. They are having another fight. But then Scully folds. And then they have a deep discussion about joe and Christian. And then they hug it out. And then Mulder says they will run away from the darkness. Then the writers give us quite possibly the juiciest kiss ever. Yep, the movie is complete. Oh wait, we need a cliffhanger. Will Scully perform the surgery. Yes, she says. Yes. But we may never know about Christian.

So I am very pleased. This movie met all my expectations, and stayed true to the characters. The story was good, the acting was good, and Skinner was there. I asked my husband (who's not an X-Phile) which X-Files feature film he liked better, and he said this one. The Stand Alone/MOW is just better than the conspiracy. The bulk of the series was carried by the MOW, and the decision to make this film a stand-alone was the right one. It was perfect. And so is the wrap around porch.
